Unicode RIGHTWARDS BLACK ARROW and BLACK RIGHTWARDS ARROW Problem ⬅ ➡ ⮕
In 1991, Unicode 1.0 has this character:
Unicode Hex | Char | Name | Date Added |
---|---|---|---|
U+27A1 | ➡ | BLACK RIGHTWARDS ARROW (old name: BLACK RIGHT ARROW) | Unicode 1 () |
In 2003, the following are added for completeness:
Unicode Hex | Char | Name | Date Added |
---|---|---|---|
U+2B05 | ⬅ | LEFTWARDS BLACK ARROW | Unicode 4 () |
U+2B06 | ⬆ | UPWARDS BLACK ARROW | Unicode 4 () |
U+2B07 | ⬇ | DOWNWARDS BLACK ARROW | Unicode 4 () |
Notice that their names are not consistent with the original “BLACK RIGHTWARDS ARROW”.
The chars “U+2B05: LEFTWARDS BLACK ARROW” ⬅ and “U+27A1: BLACK RIGHTWARDS ARROW” ➡ are also displayed in different styles in almost all fonts.
These thick iconic left/right arrows are the most needed in user interface. But, because fonts render them with incompatible styles, they are not used much. People resort to images or CSS Triangle, CSS Shapes .
Finally, in Unicode 7 released this year (), a char with compatible name is added:
Unicode Hex | Char | Name | Date Added |
---|---|---|---|
U+2B95 | ⮕ | RIGHTWARDS BLACK ARROW | Unicode 7 () |
However, as of 2015-03-09, basically no font displays it correctly.
