The Space Key
History of Space Key, Why Long Spacebar?
Do We Need Long Spacebar?
Spacebar is a waste of space.
It should be no more than 2 key's width. The rest space can be used for {Backspace ⌫, Return, Alt.}.
Length of Spacebar
On older Keyboards up to 1990s, the spacebar span 7 to 9 keys.
- DEC VT100 Terminal (spacebar hogging 9 keys)
- Sun Microsystems Type 6 Keyboard (spacebar hogging 7 keys)
- IBM Model M keyboard (1985) (spacebar hogging 7 keys)
- NeXT Keyboard (spacebar hogging 8 keys)
Keyboards after 2000, the spacebar span 5 to 6 keys.
- On Logitech Non-Gaming Keyboards, the spacebar span 6 keys.
- On Microsoft Keyboards ⌨, the spacebar span 5.5 keys.
Better design is to have many thumb keys in place of the spacebar.
Many Ergonomic Keyboards now split the space into 2 or more keys.
